Liposuction is perhaps the most easily recognized form of plastic surgery. When someone is said to have gotten “lipo”, this is what they’re talking about. If you, or someone you know, feel you may want or need liposuction, our surgical staff is here to help, with offices located in both Miami, Florida, and Los Angeles, California.
Below, we have offered a selection of frequently asked questions, and their corresponding answers, for your perusal and information.
What Is Liposuction? Liposuction is the surgical removal of unwanted fat from areas of your body such as the stomach, hips, waist, arms, buttocks, face & neck, and “love handles”.
Should I Get Liposuction? Liposuction is available and safe for nearly everyone, male or female. The ideal candidate will have a high ratio of fat to elastic skin. You should, of course, consult with your physician / healthcare provider before undertaking any medical procedure, particularly surgery.
Liposuction: What to Expect, From Start to Finish: After consulting with your plastic surgeon, who will help you assess your individual needs, and how we can best address them, your surgery can begin. Liposuction is offered on an outpatient basis in our Miami offices, under general anesthesia.
Our offices use the best in cutting-edge technology; your procedure will be performed using the LySonix system, which targets adipose fat specifically (this is the fat you’re trying to get rid of), minimizing the loss of tissue and circulatory material.
Once the desired effect has been achieved, the surgery is complete, and you can return home, upon discharge by your doctors.
Recovery and What Comes After: Upon their discharge, the patient will be given a compression bandage, which should be worn for a minimum of one month. This is both a protective measure, and a step to reduce swelling. After this time, patients can start wearing Spandex or similar materials, provided there are no complications, and the soreness is no longer an issue. As with nearly all surgical procedures, initial pain is normal, and should be expected. Oral medications can help with this. Bruising and swelling associated with your liposuction can be expected to dissipate within 2 to 4 weeks, while you can expect to see final results in 2-3 months.
Of special importance for those who smoke is the requirement to quit, both before and after your surgery. Cessation of all tobacco use is to begin (at minimum) one week before the surgery, and you should not return to smoking until at least 6 weeks after your operation.
When Can I Return to Work / Other Activities? You should expect to be incapacitated / “out of commission” for a period of at least 4 days. Light duties can be undertaken as your body allows, but you shouldn’t exercise or engage in strenuous activities for about 3 weeks after your surgery.
